The need to distribute HD signals to multiple screens has grown in the past few years. So what are the options?

The most basic method is to use a HDMI splitter and a long enough HDMI cable, about 20m is the longest without the use of a HD distribution amplifier. HDMI Splitters come in up to 16 way outputs and take the same HD signal to each source.

If the cable run exceeds 20m or awkward then Cat 5/6 cables can be used with HDMI Baluns to adapt the cable. They can be used for runs of up to 60m or more with in line amplifier. Options are available with IR return.

There are also HDMI baluns available that adapt the signal to be sent down a single coaxial cable.

For distribution of multiple HDMI input sources (Sky HD, Blu Ray etc) to multiple output sources a HDMI matrix is used. This allows selection of any source on any of the outputs. Most matrixes also allow for a return feed for IR control at the second source. Matrixes are available with 2-8 inputs and 2-16 outputs.

Wireless HDMI Senders solve the problem of running cables between HD Products in different areas.

Manufacturers of HDMI distribution products include QED, Grandbeing, Techlink, CYP & Gefen.
