Walk down any street in Britian and you will see lots of TV aerials on chimneys and walls. There are various methods of mounting aerials. Signal will depend on the strength of the local transmitter and line of to the transmitter. Most aerials have to be mounted externally on a pole high enough to get a good signal. If you happen to be in a very good signal area you may get away with mounting an aerial in a loft space

Mounting an aerial on a wall
The aerial may need to clear an overhang and depending on the length of pole required to get clearance a H mount or T&K brackets will need to be used. Both come in various sizes:

H Mounts are available in 6” 9” and 12” standoff
T & K Brackets come in 12” 18” 24” & 36” standoff

Mounting on wood & soffit boards
If a lightweight mount and aerial is used then it may be possible to fix to wooden cladding or a soffit. There are brackets that accept poles of 1” diameter. Some come as kits with the pole include, usually a J pole to give clearance.
Mounting on a chimney
This is the most common method of installing a TV aerial. Generally a lashing kit is used to secure a chimney bracket or heavy duty cradle.
There are 2 types of lashing kit one that uses a steel wire and J bolts to tighten
around corner plates, the other uses a wider plastic strap and a ratchet to tighten around the chimney. Drilling into a chimney is not recommended due to the risk of splitting bricks with the outward pressure of bolts and plugs.
Cradles come in 6”, 8” or 13” standoff
Mounting an aerial in a loft
A soffit mount or loft spike is used to mount an aerial in a loft.
Aerial Poles
These usually come in single gauge aluminium 1" 1.5" and 2" diameter.1" and 1.5" come in up to 10ft and 2" in up to 16ft lengths that can all be cut to suit.
Double gauge aluminium or steel pole can be used if the fixing is adequate.1" and 1.5" poles also come in L and Swan neck to allow for clearance of soffits and guttering.
Note: Brackets are either painted or galvanised. For coastal areas it is recommended that you use Zinc galvanized wall mounts and brackets. ABC aerials are a UK manufacturer who make a range of aerial mounts here in the UK including a range of hot dipped galvanized models.
